Gorillas in the Mist

I have been with the gorillas...in a lush forest, high up in the mountains that border Uganda, the Congo and Rwanda. I sat just a few feet away and looked into their eyes. I am blown away by how human they are. they are sensitive, playful, caring...

Their eyes look back at me and seem to want to communicate that it is ok with them to be there. They gave us permission.

There were twin babies who were curious about us.

One swung right over my head in the bamboo bushes...I thought he was going to fall on my head...he brushed my head as he went by.

I spent an hour with them. I left part of my heart up there on the mountain.

With only 800 of these beautiful creatures left in the world, the cost of this trek averaged out to $1 a gorilla. This is the price to preserve their environment. Mozimbique has lost their last rhino this year to poachers. The poachers of the gorillas are now the ones who protect them here.

This was the experience of a life time. I am forever altered by it.
